»tabula rasa«

Silke Panknin

The mysteries in Morandi’s work, the state of uncertainty between present and absent, are the starting point for the work tabula rasa.

In photography, which is the medium of my research, I depict everyday objects that are familiar to us, detached from their everyday use, in arrangements that often create an ironic statement. I am interested in the view we take of things: the moment of openness that allows our being and the being of things to come into contact with one another. For example in the glass, the light transparency of which dawns on us long before we call it »water glass« and learn to use it. »The silent contact with things while things are still unspoken.» (Merleau-Ponty)

The still lifes oscillate between emergence and decay. The work tabula rasa transfers things from reality into possibility, opening them up to the area of ambiguity, of mystery.
