Photographs of Istanbul and Anatolia
Levent Karaoğlu & Klaus W. Eisenlohr
Currently closed / Vorübergehend geschlossen
Levent Karaoğlu and Klaus W. Eisenlohr explore how people suffer or adapt to the changes in the urban environment in Turkey. For 7 years they have been cooperating artistically, and in cultural exchange projects in Istanbul and Berlin, supported by the town twinning association Kadiköy e.V.
As a result of internal migration, Istanbul has grown from a more middle-class metropolis to a megacity since the decade of 1960. The so-called Gecekondus evolved (“built overnight”), which still made it possible to keep the traditions of rural handicrafts alongside the growing industrialization. However, this bridge between Europe and Asia, between the European-oriented middle-class Istanbul and the traditionally oriented people from Anatolia (Asia Minor) now has given way to large-scale construction projects.
Karaoğlu’s and Eisenlohr’s pictures reflect the rapid transformations in Asia Minor and Istanbul paired with an aesthetic view, yes, with beauty while focusing on people and urban space. The “world in a room exhibition” is the first joint exhibition of their work.
Levent Karaoğlu tells stories of people who lead simple lives. Photography Diploma from Anodolu University, Eskisehir and distinction AFAP, Fédération Internationale de l’Art Photographique. Exhibitions with the photography institutions IFSAK, Istanbul, TFSF, Turkey and AFAD, Adana. Lecturer at the Nazim Hikmet Center, Istanbul.
Klaus W. Eisenlohr is interested in the changes in urban space and its significance. Studied at HdK Berlin and MFA at SAIC Chicago. Lecturer at the Photocentrum VHS Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. Awards: Cast & Cut, Hanover; Airlift grant Berlin / USA; Art Foundation BW.
