Duo Exhibition

»THE MARKET«

Mark Curran

Mark Curran’s project THE MARKET (2010-2019) is a critical examination of the state of global markets, their mechanisms of action and the significance of financial capital – of the forces that underlie the structure of our globalised system. It illustrates how the continued hegemony of unleashed finance, combined with technological innovation and the elimination of human reason, empathy and ethics, perpetuates the unacceptable distribution of power in favor of a super-rich minority in our globalised capitalist system.
The panel discussion (see framework program below) will open the view to the possibility of an alternative, post-capitalist, sustainable, inclusive and just future.

The ethnographic multimedia installation includes photographs, video, an algorithmically generated soundscape, artefactual material, quotes from traders’ chat rooms, 3D data visualisations and transcripts of statements by protagonists of the financial markets.

Mark Curran is an activist researcher and educator based in Berlin and Dublin. Incorporating multi-media installation, centrally informed by visual anthropology, he has undertaken a cycle of long-term projects critically addressing the predatory impact of migrations of global capital. Includes SOUTHERN CROSS (1999-2002), The Breathing Factory (2002-2006) and Ausschnitte aus EDEN/Extracts from EDEN (2003-2009). These have been extensively exhibited and published alongside presentations at conferences and symposia.
