With his intimate and radical photography, Ackerman explores time and timelessness, personal history and the history of places, immediate family and love, with all its complexities and contradictions. In his work, documentary and autobiography conspire with fiction, and all of the above dissolve into hallucination.
TIME Moving & Storage is an experimental non-linear retrospective, that encompasses the many journeys of Ackerman’s nearly 40 years as a photographer. Encounters and stories, taking place in New York, Berlin, Paris, Naples, Varanasi, and various locations in Poland, are interwoven to create a new, almost invisible narrative. It merges the history of his ancestors’ exile and uprooting with his ongoing research of the meaning of home, connection, belonging, life.
“I’m quite sure I became a photographer at age 18 because of my personal and ancestral history of uprooting. Photography has been a new language, a voice and a way to connect with a humanity that is often fragile and vulnerable. It is a way to explore places that are deeply haunted and have a strong hold on me. My sense of home has always been fragile, and I’ve long felt that I’m an outsider and therefore aligned with other outsiders, and with landscapes, architecture and living things in nature that contain that spirit. My photography is fueled by a need to connect, to pay attention, and by a love for other people, that embraces their mystery, rejects sentimentality and aspires to truth, which is, of course, always subjective and elusive”. Michael Ackerman was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1967. At the age of seven his family emigrated to New York, where he grew up and began photographing at the age of 18. Ackerman has exhibited worldwide and published several books, including Half Life, Smoke, Epilogue and End Time City, which was awarded the Prix Nadar by the Gens d’Images society in 1999. He moved to Berlin some years ago and has lived between Berlin and New York ever since.
Mit seiner intimen und radikalen Fotografie erforscht Ackerman die Zeit und die Zeitlosigkeit, die persönliche Geschichte und die Geschichte von Orten, die unmittelbare Familie und die Liebe – in all ihren Kompexitäten und Widersprüchen. In seinem Werk vermischen sich Dokumentarisches und Autobiografisches mit Fiktion, und all das löst sich in Halluzinationen auf.
TIME Moving & Storage ist eine experimentelle, nicht-lineare Retrospektive, die die vielen Reisen von Ackermans fast 40-jähriger Tätigkeit als Fotograf umfasst. Begegnungen und Geschichten, die in New York, Berlin, Paris, Neapel, Varanasi und an verschiedenen Orten in Polen stattfanden, werden zu einer neuen, fast unsichtbaren Erzählung verwoben. Sie verbindet die Geschichte des Exils und der Entwurzelung seiner Vorfahren mit seiner ständigen Suche nach der Bedeutung von Heimat, Verbindung, Zugehörigkeit und Leben.
“Ich bin mir ziemlich sicher, dass ich im Alter von 18 Jahren Fotograf geworden bin, weil ich persönlich und durch meine Vorfahren entwurzelt wurde. Die Fotografie ist eine neue Sprache, eine Stimme und ein Weg, sich mit einer oft zerbrechlichen und verletzlichen Menschheit zu verbinden. Sie ist ein Weg, Orte zu erforschen, die mich zutiefst berühren und die einen starken Einfluss auf mich haben. Mein Heimatgefühl war schon immer zerbrechlich, und ich fühle mich seit langem als Außenseiter, der sich mit anderen Außenseitern, mit Landschaften, Architekturen und Lebewesen in der Natur – die diesen Geist in sich tragen – verbunden fühlt. Meine Fotografie wird von dem Bedürfnis angetrieben, sich zu verbinden, aufmerksam zu sein, und von einer Liebe zu anderen Menschen, die ihr Geheimnis umarmt, Sentimentalität ablehnt und nach Wahrheit strebt, die – offensichtlich – immer nur subjektiv und schwer fassbar sein kann.“ M.A.
