Solo Exhibition

»Leben im Denkmal / Living in a Monument«

Bettina Cohnen

A double exhibition by Bettina Cohnen & THE LINK for the Triennale der Moderne 2022, curated by Hendrik Bohle & Jan Dimog.

Berlin. Germany. Beautiful and good living: that was one of the central themes of the planners and architects of the Hansaviertel for Interbau 57 and the first and second construction phase of Karl-Marx-Allee. The double exhibition »Leben im Denkmal / Living in a Monument« takes this as the basis for the question “How is it to live and work in monuments of modernism today?”, produced and curated by THE LINK.

What makes living in the Hansaviertel neighbourhood or in Karl Marx Allee so special? Why are both areas representative of once-divided, now-united Berlin?

For photographer Bettina Cohnen, these questions serve as the foundation of her portraits of the residents and their flats. She looks beyond the pure image. »Leben im Denkmal / Living in a Monument« combines architectural exchange with a cross-district requirement: We show portraits from the Hansaviertel in the Haus des Lehrers (Teachers’ House) on Alexanderplatz, while in turn, people photographed in Karl Marx Allee are presented in the Hansabibliothek.

Monuments and people in both East and West are interwoven. The double exhibition is part of the program of the 2022 Triennale of Modernism, the nationwide architectural festival dedicated to visions of German architectural modernism.
