»Book Stories«

Bertien van Manen

Bertien van Manen, the great renovator of documentary photography, will be honored with an extensive retrospective exhibition in her hometown of Amsterdam at the Stedelijk Museum in spring 2020. Coinciding with this large museum show, Robert Morat Gallery is pleased to be able to present a survey show titled “Book Stories” in Berlin.

Throughout her career, renowned Dutch photographer Bertien van Manen (*1942, The Hague) has been known for her publications. Her first photo books, “One Hundred Summers, One Hundred Winters” (De Verbeelding, Amsterdam, 1994) and “East Wind, West Wind” (De Verbeelding, Amsterdam, 2001), have established her reputation as an uncompromising documentarist and artist working in photography; today both are rare, sought-after collectibles on the photobook market. The exhibition and book project “Give Me Your Image” (Steidl, Göttingen, 2006) led to great international recognition and solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum für Gestaltung in Zurich, the Fine Arts Museum in Boston or the Museum Ludwig in Budapest.

Since 2011 van Manen has been publishing exclusively with MACK Books in London. The first book there was titled “Let’s sit down before we go” (Mack Books, London, 2011), followed by “Easter and Oak Trees” (Mack Books, London, 2013), “Moonshine” (Mack Books, London , 2014), “Beyond Maps and Atlases” (Mack Books, London, 2016) and finally “I will be Wolf” (Mack Books, London, 2017).

The exhibition includes individual images and work contexts from all published series and aims to provide an overview of over 25 years of photographic work and in particular to underline the influential role of Bertien van Manen as a photobook artist.

Editor’s note: The exhibition is featured on the cover of the PiB Guide Nº28 JAN/FEB 2020, PiB’s bi-monthly print issue.
