The earliest depictions of animals can be found in Stone Age cave paintings. The colors used for this were made from pigments, charcoal, plant juices, but also from animal blood. Since then, the animal has always been a popular motif in fine art. From hunting scenes in paintings to photographic images and animal portraits, from animal sculptures to animals as living actors in performances and installations.
The way we treat animals is characterized by contradictions. We love them and we kill them. Animals are victims, but they are also dangerous, magical beings. Animals are farm animals, suppliers of raw materials, means of transport. Animal are also companions. As pets, birds, dogs and cats become family members.
George Bataille formulated: The animal is the other in us. In doing so, he put the relationship between humans and animals up for discussion. In recent decades, the view of animals has changed: the relationship between humans and animals should no longer demand the subjugation of the animal, but should express itself in harmony and respect for the animal.
Behavioral research and animal ethics attribute personality and individuality to animals. Animals are sentient beings with emotions comparable to humans.
The exhibited works each formulate an individual view of the relationship between humans and animals.
