As residents of the global north-west, we have been living in a universe of images since the middle of the last century. An increasingly large part of what we think we know about the world is mediated. To handle the sheer volume of graphics, photos and short video clips, our interpretation follows simple patterns intended by both the image and the medium. Image effects can be very strong, but still not conscious. Without consciousness, but no free action.
Deconstruction (a term developed by Jaques Derrida that combines the two parts destruction and construction) is a method of dissolving given image and interpretation patterns, uncovering intentional or unconscious distortions of perception (bias) and unmasking hidden communication intentions. As a form of conscious appropriation, montage allows you to formulate your own statements (hypotheses).
Images serve to seek, find and assert identity. In emancipation movements, confronted with images that are unsuitable or missing for one’s own life, deconstruction and assembly are therefore frequently used pictorial techniques.
The participants of the project course »Deconstruction and Assembly« at the Photocentrum of the VHS Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg (led by Thomas Michalak) spent a year working on the course topic. Initially, the focus was on getting to know established artistic positions. After the research, each question was sharpened and finally a pictorial form was developed.
With works by: Felicitas Berens, Eva Grillhösl, Michael Kemmer, Natascha Kratochwila, Susanne Leibold, Thomas Michalak and Julia Zacharias.
A 64-page catalog will accompany the exhibition.
