Anne-Lena Michel (born 1981 in Würzburg, lives and works in Berlin) is a freelance photographer and artist. In 2001/2002 she spent twelve months as an au-pair in Paris, where she began taking photographs. One of the subjects that turns up frequently in her work is the thirteen-year-old girl Léa. The photographs present the teenager striking different poses in a bourgeois apartment in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, but also everyday moments of childlike abandon. The portrayed girl dons various costumes to play diverse, for the most part feminine roles, which she acts out with dramatic talent and a feigned lasciviousness. Anne-Lena Michel, who was twenty at the time she made these works, was reading magazines like i-D and The Face and felt drawn to the unembellished photographs of Juergen Teller. The power of her images lies in their unintended snapshot aesthetic and resulting sense of authenticity. With a text by Madoka Yuki.
