OPEN / GEÖFFNET!
No prior registration required. Please note the Photomuseum’s Health and Safety Regulations
From 20 March to 23 May 2021, the Braunschweig Museum of Photography will be presenting the first comprehensive solo exhibition of works by Alwin Lay. The exhibition will include both works from the past few years and pieces that were realised especially for the exhibition at the Museum of Photography. The artist will showcase the photographic and filmic works he has created in recent years in an installation concept that has been specially developed for the museum spaces.
Alwin Lay’s essential motifs and subjects include reflections on photography as a medium, with its technical conditions and the expectation of, and trust in, moments of referentiality. With his precise and aesthetically clear staging of objects in both images and films that almost unnoticeably contain interferences, he humorously circumvents our perceptual experience and defies physical-logical causalities.
In addition to significant works from the past few years, the exhibition also presents new works with reference to Rollei, the famous camera and optical instruments company formerly based in Braunschweig. For example, the work ‘The Rise’, 2020 shows a model of the famous twin-lens Rolleiflex in a metaphorical image-space. The title of the exhibition ‘Prego’ also alludes to a Rollei camera model from the 1990s.
