»The Unterwasserbuch Project«

Joseph Beuys & Lothar Wolleh

In January 1971, Joseph Beuys had his first museum exhibition outside the Germanspeaking world, at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Photographer Lothar Wolleh accompanied Beuys to Stockholm and documented the setting up of this exhibition. These photos formed the basis of an exceptional project, an artist’s book composed under both their names that ultimately attained fame under the title Unterwasserbuch (Underwater Book).

The exhibition pays homage to the multi-facetted cooperation of Joseph Beuys and Lothar Wolleh. Part of the presentation are photographs, vintage prints on PVC and an installation under the same title. The exhibition also celebrates the publication of The Unterwasserbuch Project, a cassette with a re-edition of the artists’ book from 1972 and new research by Antoon Melissen (Kerber Verlag, 2021). Lothar Wolleh Raum also issues a limited edition of Wolleh’s photographs of Joseph Beuys, on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Joseph Beuys in 2021.

Lothar Wolleh Raum is dedicated to the work of photographer Lothar Wolleh (Berlin, 1930 — London, 1979).
