In her artistic photographs, Kathrin Linkersdorff (b. 1966) illuminates the complex interplay of growth and decay in nature. Operating at the point of tension between art and science, she uses experimental approaches and processual methods from the field of microbiology to create works that record specific points in time during the organic process of the decay of plants.
At the heart of Linkersdorff’s work is the aesthetic concept of wabi-sabi, which the artist learned about during a two-year DAAD scholarship in Tokyo. The idea behind wabi-sabi is that ephemerality and imperfection are valuable aspects of life. Today, it’s the driving force behind Linkersdorff’s photographic practice, which depicts the inner architecture of plant organisms in their most fragile state. The organic becomes a visual metaphor for transience as an integral part of the life process.
Kathrin Linkersdorff (*1966) beleuchtet in ihren künstlerischen Fotografien das komplexe Zusammenspiel von Werden und Vergehen in der Natur. Sie inszeniert ihre Arbeiten im Spannungsfeld von Kunst und Wissenschaft mit experimentellen Ansätzen und prozesshaften Methoden aus der Mikrobiologie, die bestimmte Zeitpunkte im organischen Verfallsprozess von Pflanzen festhalten.
Im Zentrum von Linkersdorffs Schaffen steht das ästhetische Konzept von Wabi-Sabi, das die Künstlerin bei einem zweijährigen DAAD-Stipendium in Tokio kennenlernte. Hier geht es um die Vorstellung, dass Vergänglichkeit und Unvollkommenheit wertvolle Bestandteile des Lebens sind. Heute ist Wabi-Sabi der Motor ihrer fotografischen Praxis, mit der sie die innere Architektur pflanzlicher Organismen in ihrem zerbrechlichsten Zustand darstellt und das Organische zur visuellen Metapher für Vergänglichkeit als integralem Teil des Lebensprozesses wird.
