»Hamburg Werkstatt Fotografie (HWF)«
Applications now open for the new program starting on April 1, 2023«
HWF is a new independent educational program in documentary photography in Hamburg, and is open to all with a passion for this discursive genre. HWF is at an embryonic stage of development and will begin by offering a 12 month program taught by Michael Grieve, photographer, writer, director of ArtFotoMode (AFM) and lecturer at Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie. The patron of HWF is the Swedish photographer, Anders Petersen. HWF is situated in a 19th century warehouse near the Reeperbahn district of Hamburg, with a grand view of the River Elbe.
PROGRAM
12 month program divided into 24 seminars
1 weekend per month divided into 2 seminars
12 History and Theory seminars (Saturday)
12 Creative Practice seminars (Sunday)
The workshop/werkstatt is a series of meetings at which the students will engage in intensive discussions and activities on the subjects and projects pertaining to conceptual approaches to the broad spectrum of documentary photography. HWF is a unique educational program designed with the purpose for students to engage critically with documentary photography, with reference to the complex history of this particular and rapidly evolving genre. From the onset students will be set small yet stimulating assignments to begin the process of questioning the very essence of the photograph and the practical issues of effectively engaging with the subject. Passion is the fuel and an essential motivation for any photographer to actively and intellectually engage in reality.
AIM OF THE PROGRAM
The aim of the program is for individual students to gain confidence, knowledge and the skills to produce a strong and coherent conceptual documentary project that will be exhibited at the end of the year.
