The Leipzig Photobook Festival is an international festival that places and celebrates the potential of the photobook medium in a contemporary context. More than 30 publishers, art academies, artists and photographers from Germany and Europe will be presenting their work in the spacious foyers of the GRASSI Museum.
The third Leipzig Photobook Festival is dedicated to the theme of “Protest“. Exhibitions of historical and contemporary books, a panel discussion and short presentations will look at the topic from different perspectives.
There will also be panel discussions, presentations, photobook exhibitions, book presentations, workshops, portfolio reviews and speed dating (in cooperation with the f/stop Festival Leipzig – registration required until Feb 29, 2024 via fotos1750727523zene@1750727523f-sto1750727523p-lei1750727523pzig.1750727523de1750727523).

Exhibition: Protest in Photobook. IRAN
Luciano Zuccaccia has been interested in photobooks as a collector and researcher for several years and has built up the specialized collection “Protest in Photobook”. He is a curator for publishers and acts as a juror for photobook competitions.
We are exhibiting a selection of 25 historical and contemporary photobooks from the “Protest in Photobook” collection, which show protest movements in Iran. From rare pamphlets and leaflets to propaganda material and artistic and unique photo books. Luciano Zuccaccia will be present and available for questions and discussions.

Hannah Darabi will be presenting “Photobooks and Revolutions” at the Institut Français Leipzig on Friday, March 8, 2024 (6 – 7:30 pm). In conversation (held in English) with Silvia Gaetti (Leipzig Photobook Festival / GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts) and Jan Wenzel (Spector Books), she will discuss photobooks, protest and the role of Iranian women in revolutions.
Exhibition: Dummy Award
The Dummy Award is the most important international competition for the best unpublished photo book dummy of the year. Since 2010, photographers worldwide have been invited to participate in the competition, and year after year, numerous photo books from all over the world have been submitted. The dummies are exhibited at festivals and symposia worldwide, including in Singapore, Hong Kong, Siem Reap/Cambodia, Athens/Greece, Łódz/Poland and New Delhi/India. During the Leipzig Photobook Festival, all 50 dummies will be shown, including the 4 winning books.

Special Guest: Fotobus Society
The Fotobus is a cultural and social offer for all students studying photography, design, film, art or media. The Fotobus – a medium-sized coach with 32 seats – offers excursions and research trips to regional, national and international destinations. The trips with the Fotobus are free of charge for the participating students, all expenses are covered by the Förderverein Fotobus e.V.. The Fotobus will be parked in front of the museum on Johannisplatz and the students will present their work on tables in front of or inside the bus.
Guided tours, discussions, workshops and a film matinée round off the program.

Ausstellung: Protest in Photobook. IRAN
Seit mehreren Jahren interessiert sich Luciano Zuccaccia als Sammler und Forscher für Fotobücher und hat die spezialisierte Sammlung „Protest in Photobook“ aufgebaut. Er ist Kurator für Verlage und fungiert als Juror bei Fotobuchwettbewerben.
Wir stellen eine Auswahl von 25 historischen und zeitgenössischen Fotobüchern aus der Sammlung „Protest in Photobook“ aus, die Protestbewegungen im Iran zeigen. Von seltenen Pamphleten und Flugblättern über Propagandamaterial bis hin zu künstlerischen und einzigartigen Fotobüchern.

Dazu präsentiert Hannah Darabi am Festivalfreitag (8. März 2024, 18 – 19:30 Uhr) im Institut Français Leipzig „Fotobücher und Revolutionen“. Im Gespräch (in engl. Sprache) mit Silvia Gaetti (Leipzig Photobook Festival / GRASSI Museum für Angewandte Kunst) und Jan Wenzel (Spector Books) diskutiert sie über Fotobücher, Protest und die Rolle der iranischen Frauen in Revolutionen.
Ausstellung: Dummy Award
Der Dummy Award ist der wichtigste internationale Wettbewerb für das beste unveröffentlichte Fotobuch-Dummy des Jahres. Seit 2010 werden Fotograf*innen weltweit zur Teilnahme am Wettbewerb eingeladen, und Jahr für Jahr wurden zahlreiche Fotobücher aus aller Welt eingereicht. Während des Leipzig Photobook Festivals werden alle 50 Dummies gezeigt, inklusive die 4 Gewinner-Bücher. Die Fotobücher sind öffentlich zugänglich und können durchgeblättert werden.

Portfolio Reviews
Im Rahmen des Leipzig Photobook Festivals bieten wir Ihnen die Möglichkeit, Ihre fotografischen Arbeiten, Serien, Fotobuch-Dummies etc. von einer internationalen Jury aus Fotografie- und Fotobuch-Expert*innen, Kurator*innen, Verleger*innen und Designer*innen begutachten zu lassen.

Zu Gast: Fotobus Society
Der Fotobus ist ein kulturelles und soziales Angebot für alle Studierenden, die Fotografie, Design, Film, Kunst oder Medien studieren. Mit dem Fotobus – einem mittelgroßen Reisebus mit 32 Sitzplätzen – werden Exkursionen und Forschungsreisen zu regionalen, nationalen und internationalen Zielen angeboten. Die Reisen mit dem Fotobus sind für die teilnehmenden Studierenden kostenlos, alle Ausgaben werden vom Förderverein Fotobus e.V. getragen. Der Fotobus wird auf dem Johannisplatz vor dem Museum stehen, die Studierenden werden ihre Arbeiten auf Tischen vor oder im Bus präsentieren.
