ONE NEIGHBOURHOOD – 16 PHOTOGRAPHIC POSITIONS«

The Wedding – social focal point, hipster neighbourhood, melting pot, former West Berlin – located in the Northwest of Germany’s capital. The district forms a thumbnail of the world, despite the general belief that the coexistence of different cultures, social backrounds and religions in this country has yet to be tested. In Berlin-Wedding, this is already reality and thus, the neighbourhood functions as a metaphor for Germany’s and Europe’s substantial social issues, amongst others migration and integration, gentrification and the gap between rich and poor.

Photographs from 16 different series depict phenomena, people and places in sharply observed, timeless as well as socio-critical reportages, essays and portraits. For over a year, the photographer’s agency Ostkreuz and other freelance practitioners worked jointly with journalist Julia Boek and art director Axel Völcker from Büro Redaktion & Gestaltung. Ostkreuz, founded in 1990, is the most renowned photographer’s collective in Germany today; its images are published and exhibited nationally and internationally.

The different facets of the neighbourhood are presented in detail: From Annette Hauschild’s black and white photo series »Last Days of Disco« in which she portrays Berlin’s former workers’ pubs to Espen Eichhöfer’s series that documents Berlin’s Black Community – its largest with over 5000 inhabitants – in Christian churches and allotments.
