»Coming of Age«

Ute Behrend, Valentin Goppel, Ina Schoenenburg, Michal Solarski, Tomasz Liboska, Josef Wolfgang Mayer

What does it mean to be young today? In a time that, despite many freedoms, does not eliminate uncertainty about the future of the world and one’s own prospects, as well as questions about personal identity, and perhaps even intensifies them? How does a young generation experience radical change? How does it experience and respond to the pandemic-related restrictions in a phase of personal awakening and exploration? What fears, hopes and longings do adolescents live with today? The gallery shows five photographic projects that deal with the stages of growing up, applying different visual concepts and points of view.

Josef Wolfgang Mayer’s series “Into the World” is a Rückenfigur of his daughter, Generation Millennials. The biographical sequence refers to the temporal dimension of growing up and thus approaches the medium of film. With the series “Cut it short” (photographs and book), Michal Solarski and Tomasz Liboska have re-enacted the time of their adolescent friendship, depicting a youth in the early nineties in a small Polish village. Ute Behrend invented a world of nature retreat for young girls in her work “Bärenmädchen/ Bear Girls” (photographs and book). For the photographs of landscapes and portraits of young people included in the series “Związki,” Ina Schoenenburg traveled to the German-Polish border. “Chilling” in times of the Covid-19 Pandemic, whether and how that can be possible, is the topic of the photographs of young photographer Valentin Goppel with his highly relevant series “Zwischen den Jahren”.
