“Dear Käthe” finds Claudia Balsters and Hannah Goldstein interacting with the biographies of prominent female artists who have been an inspiration to them. Consciously working with a sense of positive appropriation, they produce independent photographic artworks, thereby transposing the other women’s various ideas into their own present. The careful design of the setting for the photographs – location, object, person, and gesture, the construction of installations – are an integral part of the artistic process. Balsters’ and Goldstein’s intimate associations with their artistic models give rise to new works that open up a resonating space and can be understood as the beginning of a conversation.
