»MISCHPOCHE – Being Jewish, however«

Jan Zappner

The photographer Jan Zappner describes his book MISCHPOCHE, which he realized in cooperation with AMCHA Germany and as part of the 1700 year anniversary of JLID, as an outing. To do this, he met 29 men and women in Germany over the course of a year and spoke to them about their relationship to being Jewish and to Germany. He adds quotes from his actors to the resulting portraits and lets them talk freely about what they think. The result is a kaleidoscope of feelings and critical impressions from four generations that couldn’t be more different.

Jan Zappner himself is a descendant of Czech Jews but grew up in Stuttgart without any Jewish reference points. However, the question of what it means to be a Jew has been with him for many years. He has never told his family story so often and freely, most of which ended in Auschwitz. With the help of the conversations, which he jokingly calls his therapy sessions, he was able to fill the emptiness that the Shoah had left in his family with vivid stories from other people and develop a new connection to being Jewish. Somehow, however.
