Solo Exhibition
»identity by repetition«
Marie Rief
Marie Rief works with analogue photographic paper, drawings, laser printing and copying. Her works illustrate the existence and flaws of objects – objects are questioned through constant copying: What is original, what is copy, how do we perceive transformation processes? Her visually powerful works, which create a new identity, a new reality through constant repetition, are on view from Sep 15 – Nov 27, 2022 at the Willy-Brandt-Haus.
I am interested in the point of tension, how object and photograph or copy of an object relate to each other. My work includes photographic works with hand-drawn negatives, series of intentional misprints, laser-printed contact sheets, and paper objects and installations,”
Marie Rief says of her work.
For her series, which combine laser printing and photo paper, she has printer cartridges printed until the paper remains completely white. Printed tracing papers are her negatives, from which analog prints are made on photographic paper.
Marie Rief was born in Berlin in 1987 and studied fine arts at the Berlin University of the Arts. During this time she develops her experimental and conceptual work with photo material, drawings and copies.
Marie Rief’s works in the exhibition allude to the importance of randomness in the mechanical printing process. The photographic works document the progression of the exhaustion of the cartridge – as well as the assembly line-like, repetitive processing in the darkroom on the prints. As the series progresses, the viewer can no longer grasp the object that stood at the beginning of the reproduction. The usual, learned perception searches for connections and thus creates a new reality, a new identity through repetition.
