From March 22nd to June 2nd, 2024, the Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus is showing the exhibition “The New Generation of Cuban Photographers” of the Michael Horbach Foundation with works by Daylene Rodríguez Moreno, Leysis Quesada Vera, Manuel Almenares, Alfredo Sarabia Junior and their teacher Alfredo Sarabia Senior. The photographs of this new generation of Cuban photographers are primarily about concrete life in the “here and now”; the large national collective moves into the background.
The presence of the photographers is present through images of the climate catastrophes of the last few years as well as the drastic experience of the Corona epidemic. Three series report on how being thrown back into the small cell of the family and one’s own home is portrayed and the immediate social reality of everyday life in Havana is also documented. But there are also series dedicated to the past that take us to places of family roots.
The curator Michael Horbach says about the exhibition: “The new generation of fine-art photographers in Cuba also takes up image ideas from earlier Cuban photographers, but develops them further and, above all, deals with the complex reality of life in the country. This exhibition thus forms a very harmonious visual synthesis between the past, present and future of Cuban photography.”
Der Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus zeigt vom 22. März bis 2. Juni 2024 die Ausstellung der Michael Horbach Stiftung „Die neue Generation kubanischer Fotograf:innen“ mit Werken von Daylene Rodríguez Moreno, Leysis Quesada Vera, Manuel Almenares, Alfredo Sarabia Junior sowie ihrem Lehrmeister Alfredo Sarabia Senior. In den Fotografien dieser neuen Generation kubanischer Fotograf:innen geht es vor allem um das konkrete Leben im „Hier und Jetzt“, das große nationale Kollektiv rückt in den Hintergrund.
Die Gegenwart der Fotograf:innen ist präsent durch Bilder der Klimakatastrophen der letzten Jahre sowie der einschneidenden Erfahrung der Corona-Epidemie. Gleich drei Serien berichten davon, wie man das Zurückgeworfen-Sein auf die kleine Zelle der Familie und der eigenen Behausung ins Bild setzt und auch die unmittelbare soziale Wirklichkeit des Alltags in Havanna wird dokumentiert. Aber auch der Vergangenheit sind Serien gewidmet, die uns mitnehmen zu Orten familiärer Wurzeln.
Der Kurator Michael Horbach sagt über die Ausstellung: „Die neue Generation künstlerischer Fotograf:innen in Kuba greift zwar auch Bildideen früherer kubanischer Fotograf:innen auf, entwickelt diese aber weiter und befasst sich vor allem mit der komplexen Lebenswirklichkeit vor Ort. So bildet diese Ausstellung eine sehr harmonische visuelle Synthese zwischen Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft der kubanischen Fotografie.“

Get a special insight into the art collection in the Willy Brandt House on a guided tour lasting approximately 45 minutes. The selection offers space for discussions and art historical considerations. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the current exhibitions can also be viewed.
