The Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus will present the German Peace Prize for Photography 2023. The prize is a joint initiative of the international specialty paper manufacturer Felix Schoeller and the City of Peace Osnabrück, and honors works that deal with the subject of peace both photographically and conceptually. The exhibition shows the winning series by Sebastian Wells and his Ukrainian project partner Vsevolod Kazarin as well as the works of four other nominated photographers.
Sebastian Wells (OSTKREUZ) and Vsevolod Kazarin have created a series of portraits about a young generation of creative people in Kyiv, who stand against the background of coming of age in the midst of revolution, conflict and war. Using the means of documentary photography, they portrayed the young people from their respective situations in their personal environment and used photography as a visual language to reflect on the terrible reality of the Ukraine war.
The photographic series by Aljoscha, Yagazie Emezi, Cèsar Dezfuli und Mattia Velati that were nominated for the award also document the situation in conflict areas and address current issues such as flight or climate change. They draw attention to war, violence or protest and at the same time focus on aspects such as humanity, resistance and justice.
Der Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus zeigt vom 22. September bis 5. November 2023 den Deutschen Friedenspreis für Fotografie 2023. Der Preis ist eine gemeinsame Initiative des Spezialpapierherstellers Felix Schoeller sowie der Friedensstadt Osnabrück und zeichnet Werke aus, die sich fotografisch und konzeptionell mit dem Thema Frieden auseinandersetzen. In der Ausstellung wird die Gewinnerserie von Sebastian Wells und seinem ukrainischen Projektpartner Vsevolod Kazarin gezeigt sowie die Werke von vier weiteren nominierten Fotograf:innen.
Sebastian Wells (OSTKREUZ) und Vsevolod Kazarin haben eine Porträtserie über eine junge Generation von Kreativen in Kyiv geschaffen, die vor dem Hintergrund des Erwachsenwerdens inmitten von Revolution, Konflikten und Krieg steht. Mit den Mitteln der Dokumentarfotografie porträtierten sie die Jugendlichen aus ihrer jeweiligen Situation heraus in ihrem persönlichen Umfeld und nutzen Fotografie als visuelle Sprache, um über die schreckliche Realität des Ukraine-Kriegs zu reflektieren.
Auch die für den Preis nominierten fotografischen Serien von Aljoscha, Yagazie Emezi, Cèsar Dezfuli und Mattia Velati dokumentieren die Situation in Konfliktgebieten bzw. greifen aktuelle Themen wie Flucht oder Klimawandel auf. Sie lenken den Blick auf Krieg, Gewalt oder Protest und stellen gleichzeitig Aspekte wie Humanität, Widerstand und Gerechtigkeit in den Vordergrund.
