»굿 – Korean shamanic rituals«
Dirk Schlottmann
The photo exhibition “굿 – Korean shamanic rituals” by German photographer Dirk Schlottmann offers insight into different shaman traditions in modern South Korea. The portfolio is the result of a long-term photographic project of 18 years.
The contact with the spiritual world and the mediation between this world and the hereafter belongs to the central tasks of each shaman. Accordingly, part of the photo exhibition focuses on the topic of spiritual contact and shows shamans in liminal moments of trance, ecstasy and spirit possession. Another subject is the shamanic death ritual. These rare photos give insight into intimate moments of an East Asian culture, whose idea of farewell, death, the afterlife and mourning is strongly influenced by Chinese, Buddhist and Taoist philosophy. A third focus of the exhibition revolves around the theme of ritual and ritual practice. The commonality of all Korean shamanic rituals is based on a homogeneous, transcendent world view and on a collective consensus of values, which are reflected in the rites, ceremonies and interpersonal and spiritual interactions.
