»Deutschland Übergestern«

Dario J Laganà

The photographic project Deutschland Übergestern, funded by the Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur, investigates the stories of those people who did not fit into the new system with their previous professional biography after the fall of the wall, had to change drastically their job and career and had to leave their past life behind.

The Italian photographer Dario J Laganà has visited some of these people after extensive research on industrial and industrial culture of the GDR and the reunification period. In the exhibition he reconstructs a number of these personal life-paths in photographic portraits and interviews.

In addition to the radical changes that can be seen as negative changes in working life, there are also cases where the break with the past and reunification have brought to a positive turn and to new opportunities.

"Premnitz, an industrial site dies" (Berliner Zeitung, 1996) / The old chemical fiber factory "Friedrich Engels" in Premnitz, where thousands of people found work in GDR times, is definitely history. On Thursday, the last fragments were taken away in the presence of Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke and Manfred Stolpe, the ground is leveled. Now there is room for new companies. The Biotherme Lauchhammer are an industrial monument in the south Brandenburg town of Lauchhammer in the district of Oberspreewald-Lausitz. This is the only thing left of a huge industrial area of more than 120 hectares where the coal briquettes were produced during GDR times with the help of bacteria. (2014)
