»Fotofestival Schiedam 2021: OPEN CALL #3«

Theme: ‘After the Deluge’
Application deadline: June 6, 2021

FFS OPEN CALL 3. 26th of April / 6th of June

For its 2021 edition, Fotofestival Schiedam is happy to announce the launch of the new international Open Call. We invite professional and amateur photographers from all over the world to reflect on the theme ‘After the Deluge’, which is related to the ecological effect we have on our planet.

You can submit your work from the 26th of April till the 6th of June 2021.

After the Deluge

Apart from the fact that we want to show who we are and leave a lasting impression of all the good and all the beauty that mankind has created, there is no denying the ecological effect we have on our planet. The effects become more visible day by day. Just look at the current climate change and the increasing temperatures on earth. The melting ice caps are changing our planet just as definitively as the former ice ages.

The American ecologist Eugene Stroemer was the first to come up with the idea of characterizing the effect of mankind as a measurable, powerful biological and geological change. Stroemer advocates a geological epoch of his own called ‘Man’, just like the Tertiary and the Holocene, but geologists disagree. Our impact is now threatening our existence, but will the rise in sea level and the remnants of plastic in the great timescale of our planet still be noticeable in a thousand years? Doesn’t nature just take over our place again as if we never existed?

Apply today and do not miss the chance to be exhibited together with winners of the World Press Photo and National Geographic photographers!

Due to the current outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the festival will take place in the historical city center of Schiedam from 18 June to 04 July 2021. In case of further aggravation of the epidemiological situation, the festival will be postponed to October 2021.

Fotofestival Schiedam 2021 Open Call #3

Introduction

From 18 June to 04 July 2021, Fotofestival Schiedam will take us on a journey of contemporary photography. With its theme ‘Our Planet, Our Future’, the festival presents a wide range of perceptive photographers who observe and question our constantly changing visual culture. Changing temperatures, rising sea levels and other examples of changes will be explored in this year’s edition. Differences in opinions seem to be increasing, while various cultures and traditions influence each other in all sorts of ways. These transitions form the common thread in the 2021 edition of Foto Festival Schiedam. The eighth edition of the festival is characterized by the refreshing combination of various genres within photography. The photos are shown at a special location in the historic city center and presented in spatial installations that ignore the typical one-dimensional photo on a wall.

Theme

The theme of this year’s edition is ‘Out Planet, Our Future’. Photography is a medium of transition par excellence and allows us to reflect on moments of transition like we live in today. Our world is constantly changing. As a still image, photography isolates a portion of time and space. But it is this cut-out that makes us aware that the world never stops. A temporary halt only exists by means of motion, a change towards a new era.

Program & Activities

This edition of the festival demonstrates a new way of exhibiting by showcasing both young talent and established names. This year Foto Festival Schiedam exhibits National Geographic, the 50 greatest wildlife photographs. A collective of iconic images in the world of nature photography.

In addition, a collection of photographs by great artists such as Lori Nix & Kathleen Gerber, Alain Schroeder, Ralph Pace, Jo-Ann Macarthur, Bence Mate and Luis Tato will be shown. Lastly, the final results of the photographic Open Call will be shown. The selected photographers focus on contemporary issues, with ‘Our World, Our Planet’ as their theme. The jury will select over 10 photographers for the Open Call exhibition at Foto Festival Schiedam 2021.

General information

The festival will be open in weekends from 18 June to 04 July 2021.

The festival can be visited on Fridays from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
