Masterclass / Workshop

»f³ – Masterclass documentary photography«

with Andreas Herzau

In three words, I’d say: Predicate highly recommended.”
Walburga Wolters, participant Masterclass 2019/2020

The f³ – Masterclass is addressing photographers and photo artists who are mainly involved in documentary photography. For ten months, the renowned photographer and lecturer Andreas Herzau supervises the participants’ own projects on 12 teaching days (6 blocks of 2 days each). These projects may be in an early stage or already advanced. In an intensive dialogue with the lecturer, the participants will deal with the identification of topics, project content, editing and photo technique. In regular project presentations they learn to talk about their own images and to assess the weaknesses and strengths of their storytelling. Tips and tricks for everyday working life as a photographer and photo artist, form an important part of the lessons.

The aim of the f³ – Masterclass is to further develop the participants’ photographic skills and abilities, to consolidate their individual artistic visual language and to support them in reflecting on their own photographic activity. The participants’ photographic works will be presented to a broad public in early 2021 in an exhibition at f³ – freiraum für fotografie.

APPLICATION: Deadline for applications is March 31 May 10, 2020 (midnight).
Participants will be selected by April 6 May 16, 2020.
Further details & application via the f³ – freiraum für fotografie website.

LECTURER: Andreas Herzau, *1962, is a photographer, university lecturer and author who deals with photography in an artistic, theoretical and applied way. After training as a typographer, he completed a traineeship as an editor at the magazine KONKRET. Since the beginning of the 1990s he has devoted himself exclusively to photography.

With an independent and often surprising visual language, he expands the boundaries of classical documentary photography, breaks through visual habits and questions stereotypes of perception. Essayistic-narrative and analytical-abstracting elements are combined in Herzaus’s intensive visual language to create dense picture stories, which he publishes in book projects, exhibitions and magazines worldwide. His twelfth book “AM” – a photographic study of Angela Merkel – has just been published. The exhibition of the same name could be seen at f³ – freiraum für fotografie.

Besides his artistic work on images, he publishes texts and essays on photography. His works, which have won several awards, have been shown in exhibitions worldwide, including at the House of Photography of the Deichtorhallen Hamburg, the German Historical Museum Berlin, the Neues Museum Nuremberg, the State Museum of the Arts Novosibirsk, the Fotofestival Noorderlicht Niederlande.
