Description
With the exhibition “Quietude” exp12 will start the New Year. The title of the exhibition literally means calmness, quietness and peace and refers on the one hand to the visual experience of the work of the Dutch artists Eva Gjaltema and Sara Mei Herman, and on the other hand to the time of the year the two artists will exhibit at exp12. Winter is a season where we tend to retreat and look for tranquility and intimacy.
Gjaltema gives a glimpse into her most recent work: “Sehnzucht” and “Sehnzucht: The Remix”, where the series are based on the artist’s personal experience of becoming a mother, the contradictory nature of the event and the conflicting emotions it creates. Her work describes the awe at the incredible ’once in a lifetime’ beauty of motherhood mixed with feelings of daunting powerlessness and isolation. We live in a time where women feel increasingly a great deal of stress— both self-imposed and external — to juggle all life roles perfectly. Gjaltema’s work reflects on this phenomena in a series of collages composed of surprising, seemingly unrelated yet deeply connected elements.
Sarah Mei Herman was invited by exp12 to show her highly acclaimed work “Julian and Jonathan”. For more then 10 years, Herman has captured intimate moments between her 20 years younger half brother and her father, portraying the triangular relationship between the three of them. Herman’s childhood memories of her own relationship with her father are somehow mirrored in her half brother. This long-term project contemplates the slow process of change within a family and our ever redefined positions within it.
Eva Gjaltema (*1979, Zwolle) obtained her BA in Photography from ‘The Royal Academy’ of Fine Art in the Hague in 2008. Her work was show in international Group and Solo shows, for example at ‘Noorderlicht Photofestival’, ‘Kunsthal Rotterdam’, ‘Gemeentemuseum Den Haag’ and ‘Photomuseum Den Haag’. Gjaltema’s series “Famylje” was nominated for the prestigious ‘Dutch Doc Award’ in 2010 and is part of the collection of the ‘Fries Museum’. She moved to Berlin in 2012 and became a member of exp12 in spring 2016.
Sarah Mei Herman (*1980, Amsterdam) completed her MA Photography at ‘The Royal College of Art’ in London in 2010. Her work has been shown internationally, among others at ‘The National Portrait Gallery’ in London and at ‘Le Chateau d’Eau’ in Toulouse. Sarah Mei Herman has received several grants from ‘Mondriaan Fonds’ and ‘Prins Bernard Cultuur Fonds’. In 2010 her ongoing series “Julian and Jonathan “was selected for the Talent issue of ‘Foam Magazine’.
