Limits of Photography

Silke Helmerdig, Stefanos Pavlakis, Jens Schünemann, Sabine Wild

Attempts to overcome chemical or physical-technical limits of the photographic have accompanied photography since its first steps. One could claim that the medium has been continuously working on its own overcoming since its emergence, very much in the sense of Vilém Flusser, who turned the relationship between camera and human upside down with his assertion that man serves as a feedback loop for the apparatus. Who is controlling whom here? In the photographic realm, shifts in boundaries – even if often driven by inventive mavericks – were fundamentally subject to the dictates of business and industry.

How could one approach the old topic of the boundaries of the photographic from today’s perspective? Silke Helmerdig, Stefanos Pavlakis, Jens Schünemann and Sabine Wild follow this question on the trail of the realities of this medium: Silke Helmerdig shows analogue superimposed exposures; Jens Schünemann forms strips of test prints into serial image sequences; Stefanos Pavlakis shows photographs of dark sea surfaces that border on digital noise and Sabine Wild interweaves photographs of Chinese megacities.
