EMOP Berlin – European Month of Photography 2025
The EMOP Berlin – European Month of Photography is entering its 11th round from March 1 to 31, 2025! Germany’s largest photography festival invites you to rediscover the world of photography in all its facets.
100 exhibitions from more than 170 submissions await visitors. Museums, galleries, archives and project spaces across Berlin are presenting a wide range of works this year that reflect contemporary trends. Under the motto “What stands between us”, the EMOP Berlin addresses current political tensions and the fragility of democratic values – a topic that encourages reflexive and critical debate through the photographs. But the festival also leaves room for projects that broaden the view in other directions – and address, for example, the technical image from experimental uses to Kl-generated images.
“With EMOP Berlin 2025, the photography festival is more popular in the city than ever before,” said Berlin photographer and professor of photography Wiebke Loeper, summarizing the screening process as part of the jury. Jury member and visual artist Akinbode Akinbiyi added that the upcoming edition of EMOP Berlin will be a festival that provides information about “a medium in transition, to which we are constantly re-establishing our relationship.”
For the 11th edition, EMOP Berlin is setting up a festival center for the first time. The strong content-related cooperation with the Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts) is hereby continued. Starting from AdK’s Hanseatenweg location, visitors can explore the many galleries, museums, project spaces and other locations. An expression of this partnership is not only the central festival exhibition »what stands between us. Photography as a Medium for Chronicling« with projects by around 20 artists – curated by artistic director Maren Lübbke-Tidow – but also the partner exhibition »Ein Dorf 1950–2022. Ute Mahler, Werner Mahler und Ludwig Schirmer« contributed by the Akademie der Künste. At the festival center, EMOP Berlin also offers an extensive program of talks and panel discussions during the EMOP Opening Days, with various EMOP specials and a supporting program throughout the month of March 2025.

Der EMOP Berlin – European Month of Photography geht vom 1. bis 31. März 2025 in die 11. Runde! Das größte Fotofestival Deutschlands lädt dazu ein, die Welt der Fotografie in all ihren Facetten neu zu entdecken.
100 Ausstellungen aus mehr als 170 Einreichungen erwarten die Besucher*innen. Museen, Galerien, Archive und Projekträume in ganz Berlin präsentieren in diesem Jahr vielfältige Arbeiten, die die Strömungen der Gegenwart widerspiegeln. Unter dem Leitmotiv was zwischen uns steht geht der EMOP Berlin auf aktuelle politische Spannungen und die Fragilität demokratischer Werte ein – ein Thema, das durch die Fotografien zur reflexiv-kritischen Auseinandersetzung anregt. Das Festival lässt aber auch Raum für Projekte, die den Blick in andere Richtungen weiten – und etwa das technische Bild von experimentellen Gebrauchsweisen bis hin zu Kl-generierten Bildern thematisieren.
„Mit dem EMOP Berlin 2025 kommt das Fotofestival mehr denn je in der Stadt an“, resümierte die Berliner Fotografin und Professorin für Fotografie, Wiebke Loeper, als Teil der Jury den Sichtungsprozess. Das Jurymitglied und der Bildende Künstler Akinbode Akinbiyi ergänzte, dass die kommende Ausgabe des EMOP Berlin ein Festival wird, das Auskunft gibt über „ein Medium im Wandel, zu dem wir uns selbst permanent neu in Beziehung setzen“.
Zur 11. Ausgabe richtet der EMOP Berlin erstmals ein Festivalzentrum ein. Die starke inhaltliche Kooperation mit der Akademie der Künste wird hiermit fortgeführt. Ausgehend vom Standort Hanseatenweg können Besucher*innen die vielen Galerien, Museen, Projekträume und weitere Orte erkunden. Ausdruck dieser Partnerschaft ist nicht nur die zentrale, von der Künstlerischen Leiterin Maren Lübbke-Tidow kuratierte Festivalausstellung »was zwischen uns steht. Fotografie als Medium der Chronik« mit Projekten von rund 20 Künstler*innen, sondern auch die von der Akademie der Künste eingebrachte Partnerausstellung »Ein Dorf 1950-2022. Ute Mahler, Werner Mahler und Ludwig Schirmer«. Im Festivalzentrum wartet der EMOP Berlin außerdem mit einem umfangreichen Programm an Talks und Paneldiskussionen während der EMOP Opening Days auf, mit verschiedenen EMOP Specials sowie einem Rahmenprogram über den gesamten Monat März.
