In search of the soul of Berlin, photographer Alexander Steffen (Vanishing Berlin) has been roaming his home city for many years, documenting places threatened with disappearance: Striking shop fronts, industrial buildings that have become unprofitable, overgrown and deserted wastelands and, last but not least, the vacancy that sometimes characterises entire streets. He captures the places that we will remember wistfully, though we did not think we would ever miss them.
The traditional business ‘Willy Schmidt Steinmetzmeister’ had to close in 2021 and the premises were left to decay. On the occasion of the 48h Neukölln festival, the former stonemason workshop will be used as an exhibition venue for the first time.
Photographs and screen prints on the theme of ‘Urban Silence’ will be on display. The exhibition will be accompanied by a musical programme and an open-air party to celebrate the release of the vinyl EP ‘Diskothek Harmonie’, produced by Vanishing Berlin in cooperation with the label noquestionsasked.

As part of the exhibition, PiB has the pleasure to give away 1 copy of Alexander Steffen’s photobook „In der Zwischenzeit / For the Time Being“ among you, as well as 1 limited vinyl EP „Diskothek Harmonie“! The cover comes in five variations, each framed by a handmade screen print, with individual colors. Each motif is limited to 50 copies. To take part in the raffle, write to us by July 11th 2024 with the subject “Alexander Steffen Photobook” or “Alexander Steffen Vinyl”. The two winners will be notified by email on July 12th. Shipping is only possible within Germany.
Auf der Suche nach der Seele Berlins durchstreift der Fotograf Alexander Steffen (Vanishing Berlin) seine Heimatstadt seit vielen Jahren und dokumentiert vom Verschwinden bedrohte Orte: Markante Ladenfronten, unrentabel gewordene Industriebauten, überwucherte und menschenleere Brachflächen und nicht zuletzt den Leerstand, der bisweilen ganze Straßenzüge prägt. Er fotografiert flüchtige Sehenswürdigkeiten, von denen wir nicht einmal ahnten, dass wie sie jemals vermissen würden.
Der Traditionsbetrieb „Willy Schmidt Steinmetzmeister“ musste 2021 schließen und die Räumlichkeiten wurden dem Verfall preisgegeben. Anlässlich des 48h Neukölln Festivals 2024 werden die ehemaligen Werkstätten erstmals als Ausstellungsort genutzt.
Gezeigt werden Fotografien & Siebdrucke zum Thema „Urbane Stille“. Begleitet wird die Ausstellung von einem musikalischen Rahmenprogramm und einer Open Air Party anlässlich der Veröffentlichung der Vinyl EP „Diskothek Harmonie“, die Vanishing Berlin in Kooperation mit dem Label noquestionsasked produziert hat.

Im Rahmen der Ausstellung hat PiB das Vergnügen, 1 Exemplar von Alexander Steffens Fotobuch „In der Zwischenzeit / For the Time Being“ unter euch zu verlosen, sowie 1 limitierte Vinyl EP „Diskothek Harmonie“!
