»C/O Berlin App«

C/O Berlin is taking photography back to town!

Images by the Ostkreuz photographer Harald Hauswald, many of which have never been exhibited before, can now be discovered at selected stations on the U2 subway line in Berlin. Using augmented reality, the app transforms subway billboards into images of the exhibition »Harald Hauswald . Voll das Leben!« on your smartphone screen.

From January 26th 2022 it will be possible to digitally experience C/O Berlin’s exhibition program at selected sites around Berlin. Using augmented reality technology, the app transforms subway billboard surfaces into pictures from our exhibition on your smartphone screen.

In context of the exhibition »Harald Hauswald . Voll das Leben! Reloaded«, the launch of the app enables C/O Berlin to present pictures by OSTKREUZ photographer Harald Hauswald, many of which have never been exhibited before. The app will bring Hauswald’s photographs to life in the stations of the U2 subway line (Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, Klosterstrasse, and Potsdamer Platz), presenting them in direct proximity of the sites where they were created. Like few other photographers, Hauswald documented the everyday lives of people in the German Democratic Republic with sensitivity and authenticity – from oppositional groups to unique snapshots of daily life in a socialist society and images of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which have become an integral part of the culture of memory in East and West Germany. The C/O Berlin App enables users to take a visual journey back to the Berlin that Hauswald experienced in the late 1970s through the mid- 1990s.

The C/O Berlin App was developed in collaboration with the artist Adam Broomberg. Featuring concise information on the exhibition, a map with locations, and directions for use, it makes it possible to discover the urban space of Berlin in a new visual way. It is available for free at the App Store and on Google Play. Scan the QR code below for free download!
