“Photography is a window” according to the French writer and poet Michel Butor. The glossy photographic print and its margin as well as the act of photographing, of framing a moment of reality, are reminiscent of the rectangular frame of a window. The camera itself reminds us of this analogy. Likewise the glass lens of the camera draws parallels to a skylight window, the glass lens functioning primarily to let varying degrees of light through.
These fundamental, often banal openings, bridge and simultaneously frame the interior and exterior and so are intrinsic to the process and outcome of image creation. It is no coincidence that the first successful print in the history of photography, taken by Nicéphore Niepce in 1827, captures the view from the window of his house.
From this moment forth, windows, whether in the background of a composition or as the main subject, have appeared in every genre of the photographic medium. As a framework for exploring the world, the Other, and sometimes oneself, the window fascinates and questions.
The group exhibition ‘From window views to windows on view’ gathers a unique selection of photographs from the Collection De Gambs and the Heinz Hajek-Halke Estate. Offering a visual journey through the themes of the collection – historical, nude, and experimental photography – this presentation brings together prints from the 1930s to the 2020s, many of which are being shown for the first time.
From window views to windows on view, the images exhibited offer a variety of perspectives. With its geometric structure, the window is an ideal frame for aesthetic compositions. Some photographers play on its effects of transparency to create a foggy reality. Others explore its source of light to bring out their subjects in intimate backlighting. As the junction between the interior and exterior worlds, the window also acquires a symbolic function in some images.
Open to curiosity, contemplation, voyeurism, and infinite daydreams, the window is most inviting to creation.
„Die Fotografie ist ein Fenster“, so der französische Schriftsteller und Dichter Michel Butor. Der glänzende Abzug und sein Rand wie auch der Akt des Fotografierens, der einen Augenblick der Realität einrahmt, erinnern an den rechteckigen Rahmen des Fensters. Ganz zu schweigen von der Kamera selbst. Wie ein Oberlicht lässt die Glaslinse des fotografischen Objektives, mehr oder weniger offen, das Licht durchscheinen.
Diese einfache Öffnung im Inneren eines Gebäudes, die Tageslicht und Luft reinlässt, bildet den Mittelpunkt der Bildgestaltung. Es ist kein Zufall, dass der erste erfolgreiche Abzug in der Geschichte der Fotografie, aufgenommen von Nicéphore Niepce im Jahr 1827, den Blick aus dem Fenster seines Hauses zeigt.
Seitdem sind Fenster, ob im Hintergrund einer Komposition oder als Hauptmotiv, in jedem Genre des fotografischen Mediums zu finden. Als Rahmen für die Erkundung der Welt, des Anderen und manchmal auch der eigenen Person, fasziniert das Fenster und wirft Fragen auf.
Die Gruppenausstellung ‘Bildfenster Fensterbild’ zeigt durch das Prisma des Fensters ausgewählte Fotografien aus der Collection De Gambs und dem Heinz Hajek Halke Estate. Die Präsentation lädt ein auf eine visuelle Reise durch die Schwerpunkte der Sammlung historische, Akt und experimentelle Fotografie. Viele der ausgestellten Abzüge aus dem Zeitraum von 1930er bis 2020er werden zum ersten Mal gezeigt.
Von Fensteraussicht bis Fensteransicht bieten die gezeigten Bilder eine Vielzahl von Perspektiven. Mit seiner geometrischen Struktur ist das Fenster ein idealer Rahmen für ästhetische Kompositionen. Einige Künstler*innen spielen mit seiner Tr ansparenz, um eine neblige Realität zu schaffen. Andere erkunden seine Lichtquelle, um ihre Motive in intimer Hintergrundbeleuchtung zur Geltung zu bringen. Als Schnittstelle zwischen Innen und Außenwelt übernimmt das Fenster in manchen Bildern auch eine symbolische Funktion.
Offen für Neugier, Kontemplation, Voyeurismus und unendliche Tagträume, ist das Fenster eine der schönsten Einladungen zur kreativen Schöpfung.
