Artist Talk
»Beyond the Ring«
Series #5 / Artist Talk Nº4
Yana Wernicke
You are cordially invited to attend the 4th talk in the 5th series of ‘Beyond the Ring’ with an artist talk by Yana Wernicke.
‘Beyond the Ring’ is an informal set of artists’ talks / presentations / performances by international artists based in Berlin and visiting artists passing through. ‘Beyond the Ring’ is there to provide the opportunity for people to meet and share their thoughts, ideas and work. If you’re interested in joining in, you will see that there is life Beyond the Ring in Berlin.
Yana Wernicke
For decades Mumbai has been the melting pot of Indian cinema. Every year countless young men and women move to the city in search of their own “Bombay Dream”. For her photography project Yana Wernicke has met with young women who have come to Mumbai in pursuit of an acting career. Most of her photographs were taken in the actresses’ private homes in order to permit an intimate exchange between the photographer and her subjects. During their playful and spontaneous collaborations Wernicke asked the young women to express themselves freely and without prejudice. Wernicke wants her work to speak about Mumbai’s magnetic pull and the many unrealistic expectations that are involved with an acting career in India. In close collaboration with her subjects she hopes to create an imagery that allows for a modern female counterpoint towards the otherwise male dominated imagery of the industry.
