Artist Talk

»Beyond the Ring«

Series #5 / Artist Talk Nº1

Tim Fulda & Julian Mährlein

You are cordially invited to attend the first talk in the 5th series of ‘Beyond the Ring’ – this time with artist talks by Tim Fulda & Julian Mährlein.

‘Beyond the Ring’ is an informal set of artists’ talks / presentations / performances by international artists based in Berlin and visiting artists passing through. ‘Beyond the Ring’ is there to provide the opportunity for people to meet and share their thoughts, ideas and work. If you’re interested in joining in, you will see that there is life Beyond the Ring in Berlin.

This year’s 13th of May marked the 70th birthday of the Israeli state. What was celebrated on the one side, on the other side constituted what the Palestinians call the Nakba (‘catastrophe’). The two photo works engage with the theme of this conflict in personal ways. Without knowledge of each others’ plans both series were created within the same timeframe and in close proximity.

Tim Fulda’s book pivots around photography’s relation to truth and time by observing everyday situations. His photographs are a record of the ongoing life in the conflict. He then subtitles his images with very personal questions that arose during his investigations of the conflict.

Julian Mährlein’s series emerged from an interest in the representation of conflict. Do images of precariousness really inform us in a way that creates empathy? Is the depiction of the suffering of the Palestinian people framing them as humans or rather supporting the orientalist stereotypes that are still omnipresent in the west?
