Artist Talk
»Beyond the Ring«
Rebecca Sampson
Dear Friends,
I would like to extend a warm invitation to attend the 9th (and final) talk in the fourth series of ‘Beyond the Ring’ by Rebecca Sampson.
‘Beyond the Ring’ is an informal set of artists’ talks / presentations / performances by international artists based in Berlin and visiting artists passing through. ‘Beyond the Ring’ is there to provide the opportunity for people to meet and share their thoughts, ideas and work. If you’re interested in joining in, you will see that there is life Beyond the Ring in Berlin.
For a place, please RSVP Ethna at ethna1742529515rose@1742529515gmail1742529515.com1742529515.
Rebecca Sampson’s work Apples for Sale is on display at the Haus der Photographie, Deichtorhallen Hamburg until May 2018 and will be exhibited in November 2018 at the Foam Museum, Amsterdam. It explores the lives of Indonesian maids working in Hong Kong under precarious circumstances as second-class migrants in a parallel female subculture. Its focus lies on the contrast between their uniform everyday constraints in the households of their employers, and the young women’s desires to lead a meaningful existence and explore their individuality. In an exclusively female environment they enter a role game, where males are played by tomboys and dolls take the place of children. Since the maids are able to move about freely in Hong Kong only one day a week, they increasingly turn to Facebook as a social and cultural sphere where their individuality and personal freedom know no bounds.
Artist Talk: Thursday, June 21, 2018, 8:30 pm
The talk will be held in English.
