You are cordially invited to attend the 6th talk in the 5th series of ‘Beyond the Ring’ with Michael Danner.
‘Beyond the Ring’ is an informal set of artists’ talks / presentations / performances by international artists based in Berlin and visiting artists passing through. ‘Beyond the Ring’ is there to provide the opportunity for people to meet and share their thoughts, ideas and work. If you’re interested in joining in, you will see that there is life Beyond the Ring in Berlin.
Michael Danner | Migration as Avant-Garde
In his photobook Migration as Avant-Garde, Michael Danner examines the new ways in which migrants are pursuing their hope for a better life.
The term “avantgarde“ stands for progress and the way of a pioneer. Driven by the desire to give their lives meaning, and guided by their own integrity, migrants bring new perspectives and points of view to our society. His photographs are accompanied by quotes from the political theorist Hannah Arendt, historical image documents of refugees, as well as UNO satellite pictures. These depict a wide spectrum of actors, which are interlaced to create a complete system. His work creates areas of tension between our fears and hopes, and leads the viewer to questions about history and identity.
Michael Danner was awarded the Museum Folkwang – Krupp Grant for Contemporary German Photography and received the Kassel Photobook Award in 2018.
