»Beyond the Ring«
Series #5 / Artist Talk Nº3
Hannes Wiedemann
You are cordially invited to attend the third talk in the 5th series of ‘Beyond the Ring’ with an artist talk by Hannes Wiedemann.
‘Beyond the Ring’ is an informal set of artists’ talks / presentations / performances by international artists based in Berlin and visiting artists passing through. ‘Beyond the Ring’ is there to provide the opportunity for people to meet and share their thoughts, ideas and work. If you’re interested in joining in, you will see that there is life Beyond the Ring in Berlin.
Hannes Wiedemann
Technology and the human body are guiding themes of Hannes Wiedemann’s personal work.
His 2016 project ‘Grinders’ follows the US-american bodyhacking community while its adherents implant self-made devices into their own body. Considering themselves cyborgs, they pursue their open-source vision of the enhanced human body and challenge both the scientific and the medical establishment equally. His series, depicting makeshift arrangements and close-up surgeries, offers a counterproposal to the sleek visual iconography that commonly surrounds topics like ‘enhancement’ and ‘future’.
His 2017 work ‘Bits and Pieces’ is set in Seoul, the ‘world capital of plastic surgery’. It is a phenomenology of cosmetic surgery as a mainstream phenomenon, drawing parallels between actual surgeries and the architectures of power that encompass them.
In his talk, Hannes will offer a discussion about the specific phenomena which are subjects of his work, as well as the broader issues of body enhancement. He will also talk about his decision to employ different photographic and aesthetic strategies in both projects.
Hannes Wiedemann’s projects were published and exhibited internationally, at Daegu Photo Biennial; In Your Face, Kubus, Hanover; Noorderlicht Photography Festival in Groningen; Organ Vida in Zagreb; Human Upgrade, Schader-Stiftung & Hessisches Landesmuseum in Darmstadt, amongst others. His book ‘Grinders’ won the 3rd prize of Kassel Dummy Award 2017.
Hannes is based in Berlin and is an Ostkreuz School of Photography graduate.
