Artist Talk
»Beyond the Ring«
Alexander Gehring
Dear Friends,
I would like to extend a warm invitation to attend the 4th talk in the fourth series of ‘Beyond the Ring’ by Alexander Gehring.
‘Beyond the Ring’ is an informal set of artists’ talks/presentations/performances by international artists based in Berlin and visiting artists passing through. ‘Beyond the Ring’ is there to provide the opportunity for people to meet and share their thoughts, ideas and work. If you’re interested in joining in, you will see that there is life Beyond the Ring in Berlin.
For a place, please RSVP Ethna at ethna1739848818rose@1739848818gmail1739848818.com1739848818.
Berlin based artist Alexander Gehring was born in Bielefeld, Germany in 1981 and studied photography at the FH Bielefeld as well as the London College of Communication. His works has been shown internationally in institutions including the Aperture Gallery, Museum Morsbroich, Pavlov’s dog Berlin, Warte für Kunst Kassel, Galerie Tagomago Paris and the Camera Club New York. In 2016 he won the Merck Preis at the Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie. He is represented by Pavlov’s dog, Berlin.
Alexander Gehring will talk about old and new works, which are, in their different ways connected to the photographic darkroom. His fascination about this slowly forgotten peculiar place leads to works which beg the question if analogue photography is still contemporary or if it’s about to become extinct. By doing that he combines ideas of classical photographic techniques in times of digital production with ideas of magic and the occult to create a requiem for the darkroom as well as to raise the ghosts of a vanishing era.
View more of Alexander’s work on his PiB portfolio page and his website.
