The series »The Flood« was created in the summer of 2021, shortly before and during the devastating floods in the Ahr Valley, and moves between existential threat and an unwavering celebration of life.

Rock’s focus is on the defiant lust for life, although the title and timing suggest an ecological commentary. Water, in its incessant transformation, becomes both motif and medium – sometimes hard and firm, bodies seemingly encased in acrylic, sometimes soft and flowing, contours dissolving into the abstract. Elsewhere, it breaks open, splintering into restless, flickering structures.

Rock’s artistic approach is characterised by both contemporary art discourse and art historical references. The motif of water as a simultaneously nurturing and destructive force is reflected in mythological and art historical references – for example in the tragic figure of Ophelia, whose fate in Shakespeare’s work has inspired countless visual interpretations.

At the same time, echoes of the enraptured aesthetics of the Pre-Raphaelites and the atmospheric, narrative pictorial worlds of Bill Viola and Gregory Crewdson can be found in his works. His connection to music – in rhythm and emotional depth – also gives his images a dynamic, almost cinematic quality that enhances their narrative power and immersive presence.

The photographs in »The Flood« have a painterly quality, with meticulous attention paid to the placement of figures and splashes of water. The interplay between movement and stasis creates compositions that sometimes tend towards the abstract or gestural, while at other times remaining figuratively grounded. The water itself becomes a brushstroke, transforming and distorting the human form, capturing fleeting moments when chaos and silence merge into a flowing, multi-layered vision.

Markus Rock was born in Solingen, Germany. He began his career as a make-up artist, stylist and production designer before discovering photography as his preferred means of expression.

After more than 25 years working with international top clients such as Vivienne Westwood, Harper’s Bazaar, Madame, Levi’s, MTV and Sony Music in San Francisco, Munich, Paris and Barcelona, he moved to Berlin in 2008. Since then, he has devoted himself primarily to the production of fine art photography. At the centre of his photographic work is always the question of what it means to be human in today’s society.

As part of the Monat der Fotografie-OFF Berlin 2025 (Month of Photography OFF-Berlin), »The Flood« invites visitors to confront the fragile balance of life, to embrace its light and dark sides – and ultimately to celebrate its irrepressible vitality.

Die Serie entstand im Sommer 2021, kurz vor und während der verheerenden Flutkatastrophe im Ahrtal und bewegt sich zwischen existenzieller Bedrohung und einer unerschütterlichen Feier des Lebens.

Rocks Fokus liegt auf der trotzigen Lust am Leben, obschon Titel und Zeitpunkt eine ökologische Kommentierung nahelegen. Wasser, in seiner unaufhörlichen Wandlung, wird sowohl zum Motiv als auch zum Medium – mal hart und fest, Körper scheinbar in Acryl eingeschlossen, mal weich und fließend, Konturen ins Abstrakte auflösend. Anderswo bricht es auf, zersplittert in rastlose, flimmernde Strukturen.

Rocks künstlerische Herangehensweise ist sowohl von zeitgenössischem Kunstdiskurs als auch von kunsthistorischen Referenzen geprägt. Das Motiv des Wassers als nährende und zugleich zerstörerische Kraft spiegelt sich in mythologischen und kunstgeschichtlichen Bezügen wieder – etwa in der tragischen Figur der Ophelia, deren Schicksal in Shakespeares Werk zahllose visuelle Interpretationen inspiriert hat.

Zugleich lassen sich in seinen Arbeiten Anklänge an die entrückte Ästhetik der Präraffaeliten sowie an die atmosphärischen, erzählerischen Bildwelten von Bill Viola und Gregory Crewdson finden. Auch seine Verbindung zur Musik – in Rhythmus und emotionaler Tiefe – verleiht seinen Bildern eine dynamische, fast filmische Qualität, die ihre narrative Kraft und immersive Präsenz verstärkt.

Die Fotografien in »The Flood« besitzen eine malerische Anmutung, mit akribischer Aufmerksamkeit für die Platzierung von Figuren und Wasserspritzern. Das Wechselspiel von Bewegung und Stillstand erzeugt Kompositionen, die mal ins Abstrakte oder Gestische tendieren, mal figürlich verankert bleiben. Das Wasser selbst wird zum Pinselstrich, der die menschliche Form umformt und verzerrt – und flüchtige Momente festhält, in denen Chaos und Stille zu einer fließenden, vielschichtigen Vision verschmelzen.

Markus Rock wurde in Solingen/Deutschland geboren und begann seine Karriere als Make-up-Artist, Stylist und Produktionsdesigner, bevor er die Fotografie als bevorzugtes Ausdrucksmittel für sich entdeckte. Nach über 25 Jahren Arbeit mit internationalen Top-Klienten wie Vivienne Westwood, Harper’s Bazaar, Madame, Levi’s, MTV und Sony Music in San Francisco, München, Paris und Barcelona zog er 2008 nach Berlin. Seither widmet er sich vor allem der Produktion von Fine-Art-Fotografie. Im Zentrum seines fotografischen Schaffens steht stets die Frage nach dem Menschsein in der heutigen Gesellschaft.

Als Teil des Monat der Fotografie-OFF Berlin 2025 lädt »The Flood« die Besucher:innen ein, sich der fragilen Balance des Lebens zu stellen, seine lichten wie dunklen Seiten zu umarmen – und letztlich seine unbändige Lebendigkeit zu feiern.
