Solo Exhibition
»Music from the present and the past, music festival of Guadeloupe«
Salah Safsaf
New meeting point for photography lovers and friends of the music of the French Antilles from June 15th 2017 in Berlin! The Atelier für Photographie in Berlin has the honor to present the work of Salah Safsaf.
In several music festivals in the past, he has presented us the big talents of the music scene of the French West Indies Guadeloupe and Martinique. The exposition “Music from the present and the past, music festival of Guadeloupe” displays over 15 portraits of artists of the French Antilles. Next to music legends like the Vikings, Malavoi and Kassav, Salah Safsaf introduces us, through his eyes, to big jazz talents like Alain Jean-Marie and Mario Canonge, as well as Admiral T, the master of carribean dancehall. Thanks to their vivid spontaneity, his portraits show us an insight of the culture of the music of the European Caribbeans.
Salah Safsaf, musician, photographer and short film producer grew up in Paris. After attending school to become a jazz dancer, he moved to the French Islands La Réunion, la Martinique and la Guadeloupe in 1994. On this last island, he stayed for 11 years and worked as a music journalist for a newspaper. Next to his knowledge of the local music scene, he often left aside his camera when being with the musicians and established friendships with the musicians on a very personnel and intimate level, that one can find in his pictures. He accompanies their dances, songs and music to share with us the magic of their music.
