In its new exhibition, AFF Galerie investigates changing perceptions of space and its representation within contemporary media.

The photographic perspectives of Diana Artus, Sven Gatter, Tamara Lorenz and Sarah Straßmann both depict and inhabit space, forming a network of examples which understand the possibilities of the medium not only as an imaging process, but photography in particular as an experimental and constructive practice.

In the early days of photography, the focus lay on technical and visual possibilities. From the 1960s on artists expanded their relationship to space to include social and conceptual topics. With the recent developments of technical processes such as virtual reality at the turn of the millennium, there is a tendency within the arts towards an expanded concept of photography, which also includes installation formats.

In her work There is tiresome, but attractive, Diana Artus addresses topics such as the relationship between urban space and mood as well as the question of the psychogeographic readability and narration of urban structures. In the form of an installation setting, various photographs from the business and shopping district Gangnam/Seoul gather in the exhibition space.

In his project Echo Tektur, Sven Gatter transfers the structural change in rural regions of the former DDR into associative image constructions. The decay and reconstruction of space, architecture and even (political) systems is opened up both figuratively and as a model.

Tamara Lorenz is a photographer and sculptor, both in front of and behind the camera. In her works from the series Ismus and Realsubstrakt, spatial and graphical thinking overlap. In this way, the artist develops architectural-spatial sculptures and collages in order to subsequently transfer them to photography.

The work The Kingdom by Sarah Straßmann examines the relationship between space and the image space. Her three-dimensional photographic objects are based on images from the ancient archaeological site of Perre/Turkey. By folding the photographic material, the artist explores the representational schemes of aesthetic spatial orders.

The exhibition opens up a space into the indefinite and the possibility of imagining things beyond the boundaries of the picture.
