Formations combines art photography and curatorial ideas; it investigates and inquires into the boundaries of what it means to put on an exhibition in the digital age. Within a ‘changing exhibition’ format, the pictures engage in a dialogue of unexpected commonalities and differences.

The exhibition begins with a curated show of works from current work groups by members of aff Galerie. Over the course of the show, visitors are invited to become curators themselves. The images are hung in such a way that they can be moved around; each new hanging is then documented online.

Beyond this participatory effect, the exhibition also poses some basic questions, for instance: what commonalities and variations can be discovered, whether they’re of a formal, thematic or some other kind? In terms of evaluating images, what function does comparison perform? Who determines the conditions for which things are placed in relation to one another and in what way? This is an exhibition that creates new spaces for association – of both the physical and conceptual kind.
