»Quando la felicita non la vedi, cerca la dentro. Napoli 1999-2017«
Jeanne Fredac
Curated by Armelle Mathieu
The exhibition features a photographic series about Naples begun in 1999 that explores various aspects in the heart of the city. The journey takes us through the old historic center to the buildings of the sixties, such as “Le Vele”, the scene of the movie Gomorrha, to the brutalism architecture of Aldo Loris Rossi. The photographs are not limited to architecture, however; they invite us to discover the body and the spirit of Naples: the sea and the fish markets, the religion, so unusually celebrated here in a mixture of pagan rites and Catholicism. The exhibition traces the changes the city has undergone as well as the development of the photographer’s artistic work over the past twenty years, from classic black-and-white images to the more recent experiments with films and exposures.
The photographs are accompanied by an extensive text about the city of Jeanne Fredac, introduced by Erri de Luca. The series consists of more than three hundred photographs, forty of which are shown in the exhibition.
The exhibition is part of EMOP Berlin — EUROPEAN MONTH OF PHOTOGRAPHY 2018.
