THE WAY THE WORLD APPEARS is an exhibition project of the seminar 2017/18 with Tobias Kruse at Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie Berlin. The photographers have spent a year focussing on their surrounding reality. The resulting projects deal with the personal environment as well as aspects of social reality on a large and small scale.

In the beginning, there is reality. We see reality, the camera sees it and yet both don’t synchronise. But is this discrepancy just due to the inadequacy of the technical apparatus on one hand and its perfection on the other? Is reality a narrative that lies behind the image? Maybe reality is, too, what we construct through the picture itself. Or isn’t reality equally distant and alien to both narrative and construction? Nothing is as it seems. The projects realised in the seminar of Tobias Kruse document the disintegration of a trivial reality, of sensual imagery and of aesthetical fascination. In the end it is clear: Nothing seems as it is.
