The picture of the hour between today and tomorrow
W.B. Yeats wrote once:
One should say before sleeping: I have lived many lives. I have been a slave and a prince. Many a beloved has sat upon my knee and I have sat upon the knees of many a beloved. Everything that has been shall be again.”
A state that perhaps best describes the photographs of Laura F. Izuzquiza – the moment of the in between, just before the jump and yet already landed. In her pictures, black and white outlines form a route that nimbly crosses seasons, continents and life phases. They are shadow fissures that form meandering rivers or pass into rock massifs and horizons. Betwixt, people – free falling, in the state between being awake and being asleep, sunk and yet quite there. And hair, always and again hair, as if you could hold onto your hands the unpredictability of life and keep the moment just before dawn – this strange twilight state that does not describe itself and leaves the taste of freedom on the tongue.
In six diaphanous chapters, the artist tells us about the longing, this peculiar feeling of expectation, which can be difficult and easy at the same time. It’s the “What if?” and in the end everything is entirely different.
