»Collages / L.A. Crossing«
Peter Klare / Jens Liebchen
In the new duo exhibition at Galerie Springer Berlin with Peter Klare and Jens Liebchen, both artists are fundamentally concerned with their own point of view in relation to the photographic motif. While Jens Liebchen’s pictures are created as “drive-by-photography” on a year-long journey through Los Angeles, Peter Klare pushes himself directly in front of the lens with his collages – into a world of images from the distant past.
Galerie Springer Berlin cordially invites you to the opening of »L.A. Crossing« and »Collages« on May 21st from 1 to 6 pm. Peter Klare and Jens Liebchen will be present.
Peter Klare »Collages«
Sharp-edged lines, image overlays, positive and negative forms and the unexpected complementation. The monochrome color field on the found footage creates new pictorial spaces that create and at the same time overcome barriers. Existing pictures are partly made unrecognizable by colored forms and arouse curiosity when looking at the picture.
In his new collages, Peter Klare inserts works from the group of works ‘Shapes’ in landscape photographs taken from the private family album. In this way, the compositions become the artist’s mental places of longing and, on the trail of his own identity, also describe his origins. Contradictory assertions collide like on a chessboard, they push each other, complement each other and form the new picture in interaction.

Jens Liebchen »L.A. Crossing«
In his L.A. Crossing series, which he has been producing since 2010, Jens Liebchen shows the capital of unconditional mobility as its residents prefer to see it: through the windows of their cars. From the moving car, Liebchen looks out over a city that combines the opposites of utopia and dystopia. L.A. Crossing itself sounds like the title of a film and so the street becomes the stage and the photograph a kind of still image. Bathed in the beguiling Californian light, the city appears as fictitious and real at the same time.
An icon of photographic art, Stephen Shore’s picture “La Brea Avenue and Beverly Boulevard” serves as a theoretical hook for Liebchen’s work. Starting from the »La Brea Matrix Project«, the center of which was the aforementioned photo, Liebchen reversed her gaze and is now looking back from the street at the city. He neither stops, like Lee Friedlander in »America by Car«, nor does he submit to a strict system, like Ed Ruscha in »Every Building on the Sunset Strip«. Jens Liebchen drives and drives. From the privileged and air-conditioned perspective of the driver’s seat, the light and dark sides of the metropolis are revealed.
Jens Liebchen (*1970) has been working as a freelance photographer since studying ethnology. His work has been exhibited worldwide and is part of the collection of the DZ BANK art collection in Frankfurt a.M., the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the art collection of the German Bundestag. Liebchen lives and works in Berlin. He is represented by Galerie Springer.
