Jenö Gindl

The third solo exhibition of the photographer Jenö Gindl (*1962) in Galerie Poll focuses on a series of black-and-white works from 2018 in which photographs developed with the Kallitype process are mounted on transparent Japan paper behind which the stretcher shimmers through as a cross. The various seemingly arbitrary everyday motifs are combined with labels or picture captions resembling those often found in exhibitions or catalogues: title, year of origin, size and provenance of the artwork. Both elements taken together are perceived as “a picture”, which does not however evoke a familiar reality, but rather confronts the viewer with questions. Does the information on the labels refer to the motifs shown in the picture? What is the meaning of the titles and provenances noted there? Why is the construction of the stretcher frame shown?
