In this year’s summer exhibition Galerie Hilaneh von Kories presents insights into the variety of artistic positions, which the gallery owner represents. 13 selected photographic groups of works will be shown, especially those which have been presented in individual exhibitions in the new location in Schöneberg since the move of the gallery from Hamburg to Berlin in October 2014.
The 42 motifs of the group exhibition constitute not only a fascinating journey through the world of photography but at the same time a varied expedition through different cities and continents. In this way we can start with the precise view of Wolf Suschitzky in the London of the 1930s and experience the immediate post-war time in Italy, France and Germany through the eyes of Bill Perlmutter, whose career began as reporting photographer for the US Army. Another spot is Istanbul in the classical perspectives of Ara Güler, who documented the lively street scenes of the metropolis in the 1950s as the “Eye of Istanbul”.
In the same decade we look at the life in Hamburg in all its intensity as Herbert Dombrowski captured it in the streets of the hanseatic town. Paris and the world of fashion are represented by Walde Huth, who set high fashion clothing in scene in the urban space in the 1960s. A special homage to his home region has been created by Stefan Vanfleteren in the 1990s with his impressive black-and-white series of pictures “Belgicum”. Also in black and white are the pictures by Neal McQueen whose series of pictures from last year shot on Greek islands focus on the dramatic situation of refugees. From Europe the journey continues to moving portraits which Dana Gluckstein took on Hawaii and in Kenya or Mario Marino in Africa. Both photographers succeed again and again in celebrating the dignity of each individual presented in their dedicated and sensitive portraits. Through subjective perspectives of her “Wunderland” we finally enter the very individual world of the Berlin photographer Inessa Dolinskaia, which cannot be geographically located. No less surprising are the creatures of fantasy or dream figures created by the Rotterdam artist couple Schilte & Portielje in their lavish computer generated collages. The work of the Hamburg photographer Arve Dinda concentrates on the world of the opera. With the contemporary architectural studies of Loïc Bréard we are back in the real world, yet his black-and-white motifs testify a fascinating experimental approach to the visible world.
The interplay of reality and production, documentation and subjective perspective create the selection’s basic framework for this presentation. There is much to be discovered, revelation and a new perspective of the world are guaranteed.
