hannah goldstein says she does not sleep well. Her nights are short, interrupted by nightmares haunted with insane, often faceless characters. In the morning, she digs into her archives, searching for images which could fill the void left or imposed by her subconscious. Doing so, she renders the inventions of her spirit comforting, sometimes even funny – and above all tangible: through the concrete act of cutting and assembling, she hands her dreams over to reality.

Sara Lamens seems to work with collage the other way around: her anxiety comes from the gap between the intimate, tender and accustomed, and the absurdity of the human condition. Her photographic fragments are loaded with specific emotions, the content of which vanishes when in contact with other fragments, even though these can be just as personal. The audience is then allowed to project their very own feelings onto those fragments – and, together with Sara, to envisage the abyss with more lightness.

Sara Lamens (1977)
Born in Belgium and currently also living and working in Belgium.
She studied International Politics in Gent (B) and Aix-en-Provence  (F) and after a few years of living and working abroad in post-conflict regions in the Balkans and the Middle East, she decided to study Photography at LUCA school of Arts in Ghent (B) and Drawing. She challenges the analogue photography process in a very physical way, in and out of the darkroom, combining layers and drawing and ink printing. Her photography is often in response to her immediate surrounding, exploring the blurring lines between fiction, facts and emotions, between intimate and conceptual, between abstract and figurative. Recently she started to explore the possibilities of the combination of writing and the image, within an open narrative.
