Kathrin Tschirner lives and works in Berlin as a freelance photographer and photo editor. She completed her Master’s degree in Photography & Communication Design in 2015, under the direction of Ute Mahler at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW). During her international Bachelor’s degree in Photography & Fine Arts at the ArtEz Academy for Art&Design in the Netherlands, she lived for nine months in Istanbul where she worked as a photo assistant for renowned fashion and documentary photographers.
Nowadays she works for various magazines such as Dummy Magazine, Missy Magazine and Süddeutsche Zeitung.
In 2016, she has won the International Photoawards in Kuala Lumpur with a picture from the series ‘Kurfürstenstraße’. This project originated during her graduate studies at the HAW and culminated in a book by the same name. In addition to being shown at festivals and widely exhibited, the book ‘Kurfürstenstraße’ was shortlisted for the Book Dummy Award Kassel (2015) and selected by the Goethe-Institute Moscow as one of the best German photo books of 2015. Two of Tschirner’s projects have been shortlisted for the Athens Photo Festival and her book was shown in the National Gallery in Madrid during the PHotoEspaña 2016.
She was nominated for “Gute Aussichten” (Germany’s premiere exhibition for young talent) in 2015 and recognized as an ID New Talent at the Biennale Köln (Cologne, Germany) in 2015.
Tschirner has been a co-curator and member of the non-profit “aff Gallery” for photography in Berlin Friedrichshain since 2011.
